A Case of the Mondays Didn’t Stop Thrown From Selling Out recordBar
March 3rd, 2025 - Kansas City, MO
Metalcore Monday was in full effect for attendees of Swedish metalcore band Thrown’s sold out headlining show at recordBar in downtown Kansas City. Off the back of their 2024 album EXCESSIVE GUILT, it was time for the band to headline a tour themselves.
HEAVENSGATE was the first band of the evening, coming all the way from Australia, they were one of the bands I was personally the most excited to see. If you like Alpha Wolf, check out HEAVENSGATE. They share the same distorted guitar sounds & constant heavy vocals that tick every box for me. All four members were fun to watch on stage, really playing into the music the whole time. Setlist highlights include, “GINSICK”, “RATKING”, and a new track that was just released a couple weeks ago, “OBLIVION”.
HEAVENSGATE is 100% a band to watch out for, it’s only a matter of time before they get super popular in countries other than their own!
Birmingham Harcore band No Cure took the stage next and it’s always a good day when they’re in Kansas City. Not only are they some of the best people in the scene, and my friends, they also never seem to miss music wise. The five piece released an album last year called I Hope You Die Here, and if you appreciate hardcore please give it a listen, you won’t regret it. Every member of this band plays an integral part in every single song and live it’s even more apparent. Their set included songs spanning most of their catalog, but some of the best ones included, “Don’t Need Your Help”, “Parasite(TWO SHOTS)”, and “Hang Me From the Bible Belt”
Stage diving & moshing is normal during shows like this, but I did see a guy dive straight into the recordBar wall Looney Toons style, (he was fine.)
Varials is a band I’m not extremely familiar with but they were a lot of fun to watch. The chunky guitar riffs and very intentional drum parts were neat and made for a good straight to the point representation of the genre on display tonight. This was easily the most rowdy set of the night, I had to stop taking photos and start catching stage divers so I didn’t get knocked to the floor. A couple of stand out tracks of the night were “.50”, “South of One”, & “Deadweather.”
The cool thing about Thrown is that their music is fast, aggressive, and to the point. With songs averaging about two minutes a pop, attendees of this tour are essentially hearing the band's entire discography during their set. A few of my favorite tracks were, “new low”, “on the verge”, & “dwell.” Thrown is easily the most accessible metal band on this tour, bringing in casual fans of heavy music and people more familiar with the genre.
