“This Movie Sucks” marks the return of Indie Rock Duo, DURRY

Have you ever imagined working with your sibling full time? That’s the reality for DURRY, a Minneapolis two-piece act featuring Austin and Taryn Durry. It works for them, though, and they have been making music together since the pandemic when Austin moved back into his Minneapolis childhood home. An innocent post to TikTok with a demo of their song “Who’s Laughing Now” launched them into the minds of thousands of users, including Fred Durst of Limp Bizkit.

Following viral success, they released their debut album Suburban Legend in 2023. I first heard of them when I was recommended the song “Little Bit Lonely”, which still remains in my regular rotation. The album cover features the siblings sitting on the grass in front of a bright yellow house that could be plucked straight from a sitcom set. This album is wrought full of nostalgic sonic elements and introspective (and sometimes sardonic) lyrics about getting older in times of insecurity.

After taking a self-described embargo from new music, DURRY has returned with the first single and title track from their new album, “This Movie Sucks.”

Even though the song promises “No ride into the sunset / there's no bloopers at the end”, this is just the first single off of their sophomore album. On their website, DURRY promises this album will relate to themes of grief, remembering loved ones, and even the toxic nature of Internet culture. Overall, this song seems like an evolution of the existing signature DURRY sound and lyrics.

So if you like the sound of “This Movie Sucks” wait for the full album on June 27th. In the meantime, members of the “Losers Club” can pre-order a CD, a vinyl record, or an N-64 cartridge styled cassette tape or even catch these siblings on one of their over twenty tour stops this fall.

“And no one knows when the good old days / Are comin' to a close, or a fresh start “

-DURRY, “Little Bit Lonely”

The sibling duo took their time in the creation of this song and it paid off. The song begins with an electronic synth opening that sounds straight out of a horror movie before Austin sings: “I've been living life like it's a movie I don't wanna watch / Can we just cut right to the montage?”

The chorus then kicks in, immediately transporting listeners back into the sonic world of DURRY. Austin’s soaring vocals liken his life to a bad horror movie, tying into the synth opening. Lyrical analogies move through of mentions of ketchup blood and plastic guns. The Downtrodden lyrics feel like a more mature take on the more self-deprecating moments of their first record,
