A New Offering from Sleep Token - ‘Emergence’ Single Review
Sleep Token is an enigma and one of the most interesting acts at the moment. They remain anonymous, wearing masks on stage, and are known for their use of cryptic lore and language. The four-piece band exploded in popularity with their third album, ‘Take Me Back To Eden,’ in 2023, with the title track and ‘The Summoning’ spreading all over TikTok.
In true nature for the band, this single was preceded by a mysterious rollout.
Prior to even confirming whether a song was on the way, Sleep Token launched the website “showmehowtodanceforever.com,”where fans were prompted to pledge their allegiance to “The Feathered Host” or “House Veridian.” This was joined by pink and grey floral and fire imagery, telling fans to “Prepare.”
Emergence embodies the spirit of other Sleep Token tracks, promising more of their signature sound. What is their signature? Winding, prog-metal tracks that make no effort to stick to one genre and awe-inspiring lyrics. “Emergence,” the lead single for their upcoming fourth studio album Even in Arcadia, is exactly that.
A notable feature of this single is a seemingly brighter atmosphere about it when compared to other Sleep Token songs. It is dynamic, beginning with soft and soulful vocals over piano. The refrains feature dreamlike vocals that beg the listener for affection through the repetition of “Go ahead and wrap your arms around me.”
“I am the rose you relinquished again”
“You know the behaviour / canines of the saviour / Glory to the legion/ trauma for the neighbours” ”
These shift into faster, more electronic verses whose lyrics evoke a push and pull through the contrast of ruin and divine imagery. This contrast suggests a change in perspective; while they crave the comfort of the listener, there’s destruction that comes with it.
A heavy, more traditional metal breakdown concludes the final bridge before giving way to a saxophone conclusion played by Gabi Rose. It’s as though it moves through 3 distinct acts in its six-and-a-half minute runtime
The new chapter commences May 09. Even in Arcadia is a new beginning for the band’s story, following the conclusion of their trilogy. This is also their first record under RCA Records.
Should you wish to worship, the band is embarking on a headlining North American arena tour.
Following issues surrounding resale tickets for their 2024 tour, they have elected to use Ticketmaster’s Face Value Exchange. Should a fan be unable to attend, they have the option ro resell on Ticketmaster at the original price. Additionally, tickets are unable to be transferred.
Pre-Sale for the tour begins March 20th for those who pre-save the album. Onsale for the general public begins Friday, March 21, at 10 a.m. local time.
