JAWNY Marks his Return with New Single “Control”
In a world where much of indie-rock sounds the same, Jacob Sullenger, otherwise known at JAWNY, has been able to carve a corner of music that is entirely his own. 2023’s It’s Never Fair, Always True felt like a true encapsulation of what Jacob has worked towards, but his new single “Control” brings something entirely fresh to the table. It’s danceable, catchy, and oh-so JAWNY.
What exactly makes a JAWNY song a JAWNY song? I’d argue a rhythm and rhyme that you can’t get out of your head. “Control” has been bouncing around in my head since I first listened to it last night, and I’ve been unsuccessful in trying to get it out. This track is atmospheric in a unique way; it has just enough grooviness to make you want to set down your morning coffee and do a little dancin’ in your pajamas. To me, this is the best type of music.
“Everything is falling apart.”
This line is repeated throughout the length of the song, and it brings me back to the music that is so feel-good, but holds sadder lyrics. Hopefully, whatever was falling apart will begin to rebuild itself as we enter this new era of music. It would be awesome to see a bit of a storyline through the new music as was seen in some tracks on It’s Never Fair, Always True and its music videos. The consistent and almost melancholic way that the line is repeated, backed by such fun instrumentals, feels like in a statement in and of itself.
I had the honor of seeing him live during his last album run, and I know we’re all hoping that he’ll tour once again. “Control” is going to be a treat to see live with its rhythmic, quick drums and of course that super sexy riff that spans the song. I can only imagine what he’s got up his sleeve for this era, and already it feels like a fresh start for him. 2019’s “Honeypie” was his breakout track— but I have a hunch that the new songs he’s creating are going to be his next. He has mastered his craft and will continue as a force to be reckoned with in the world of indie-rock and pop. Watch out folks, he’s back!
